So if you have been reading my blog, you know about "Bunny". If you are new to the blog, let me get you up to speed. Bunny has been a part of Elise's life since the day she was born. Bunny has been through thick and thin with Elise. Anywhere Elise goes, Bunny usually follows. Rain, or shine, during times of sickness, Bunny is there right next to Elise. Bunny has even taken the blame for a few things (refer back to older post). Bunny was in a recent accident and we had to lay Bunny down to rest. This was an extremely difficult moment. It actually reminded me of when Rudy Huxtable had to flush her goldfish down the toilet and they held a memorial service for it.
The story goes as follows:
We read Elise her story as usual, kissed her goodnight, tucked her in with Bunny next to her and turned off the light. She turned on her lamp that is next to her bed to read (this happens every night). Her lamp is (was) a cylinder lamp that is open at the top. We were downstairs and Joe heard Elise crying, so he went up to check on her. He quickly called me up. I entered Elise's room to her saying, "Bunny is hot and has brown all over." Joe looked at me and said, "Bunny is burnt - I think this is the last of him." Apparently Bunny's head went down into the cylinder lamp and his face burnt off from the light bulb. We're not sure if Elise put Bunny in the lamp, or if she threw him and because Bunny is top heavy, his head fell down into the cylinder. Nonetheless, Bunny's head burnt off. Elise was very sad by the entire incident and cried for her Bunny. Luckily a good friend sent Olivia a "Ducky" that is similar to Bunny. We told Elise that Ducky would sleep with her until a new Bunny arrived (we did order one). Elise continues to speak about Bunny and how he is gone and got hurt. When we talk about hot and cold things she refers to Bunny as something hot (as if you would refer to an oven as hot). We all remember Bunny fondly, but his time had come.

Oh, the reading lamp has been removed and will not be replaced at this point.

OUCH! Poor Bunny. But I'm laughing outloud right now (don't tell Elise). Glad Ducky got there just in time as a stand-in! And thank God Bunny didn't go up in flames.
Oh no, Bunny! What a gruesome way for him to go! It's kind of a happy story in a way though, it reminds me of the Velveteen Rabbit. Maybe now he is Real!
The fact that bunny's eyes are closed only underlines the gruesome fatality of the burn.
Sigh.
I've seen a lot of good friends in my day die by the hands of a cylinder lamp. Tragedy rears it's ugly head once more.
R.I.P.
